Globally recognised as one of the most exciting, forward thinking and cutting edge producers on the scene, Chris Lake's rare ability to create tracks that fuse elements of house, electro and techno has not been lost on his fellow peers. His innovative productions continue to receive wave after wave of support from such luminaries that include Sasha, Danny Howells, Justin Robertson, Sander Kleinenberg and Carl Cox, whilst Pete Tong leads the way in championing the unique sound that has established Chris as one of the world's elite. An avid producer since 2001, Chris's breakthrough came in 2005. His tracks 'One Too Many' and 'Release' caught the attention of the world's press and A&R bosses, but it was the release of his smash hit 'Changes' that catapulted his name into the record boxes of DJs across the planet.
It’s hard to believe that Chris Lake has never played The Arches, so you can bet that he is chomping at the bit to perform in his home country’s legendary club. We caught up with Chris on his North American tour for a quick chat about Miami, tunes and alternative fuel sources!
Where in the world do we find you today?
Sirius Radio, New York How’s life treating you so far in 2009?Busy as it gets. Spent the first part of the year finishing off my album, getting all the bits done you know… Right now I’ve been out here since Miami… seven weeks of touring North America for my new album – the reaction has been ‘hot’ so I’m really happy!
How was Miami? Did you get much work done or enjoy the parties and sunshine too much?
For me Miami was all about the Friday; we hit an Armani roof party, smashed a set at Ultra in the Amnesia tent, then went onto an AM Only party at Karu & Y, finishing things off at 4am with our boys at nervous records at Nocturnal.
Do you prefer Ibiza or Miami?
Ibiza… less cars more music! Have you confirmed any Ibiza dates yet that you can tell us about?Yeah… I’m definitely returning to Cream at Amnesia – love that place!
What’s your favourite club to play in the world?
Warung, Brazil. Simply the most amazing experience ever.
You’re playing The Arches for the first time on May 2nd. Are you excited about finally playing Scotland’s legendary club?
Hell yeah! But then I’m gagging for an Irn-Bru too… You’ve played at Live at Loch Lomond and Coloursfest. Fond memories of playing for Colours in the past?Of course, the shows I did for Colours were ridiculously good. The crowd went nuts, so my experiences have been nothing but positive that's for sure.
Have you attended Colours events in the past as a clubber?
Yeah I have done a few. A couple of Sasha shows, Carl Cox, Lawler, Oliver Klein. Always a sweat pit, and the vibe is awesome!
Do you think the Scottish club scene is as good as elsewhere in the UK?
When you play to a crowd as open minded as the Scottish, it is difficult to pick any fault with it. I always have fun playing here so I think it is at the very least equal, but the Scottish reactions are better.
Have you ever shouted the famous Scottish clubbing chant in a club?“
Ere we, ere we, ere we f**kin go”?..............................Yes!
How are things going at the record label?
Better than ever! We’ve got some cracking tunes ready for release… we’re hoping for a busy summer.
Any new tracks we should be looking out for?
Marco Lys feat. Mooli - San Francisco Rain. Awesome tune!
Who are your hot tips for the summer?
Awdio.com! We hooked up with them for my North American tour. Live sets getting streamed on the net 24 hours a day – does it get any better?? When did you first catch the DJ bug?I think I was 13… seems almost a bit wrong hey?
Who were your musical inspirations when growing up?
I listened to all sorts! Nothing in particular, I am surprisingly open minded with music.
If you could play back to back with any DJ in the world, who would it be and why?
Sara Cox – front to front!
What’s your pet hate when DJing?
Sh*t opening DJs twating out 135bpm noise!
Tell us one interesting fact about yourself…
I’m fascinated by new emerging energy supply technologies. Literally on BBC News online everyday in the hope that they’ll find new ways to fuel my Mac… can you imagine how many tracks could be made on long-haul flights! It's not an interesting fact though is it?
Finally, if it were the last day on earth and you had to attend a fancy dress party, what would you go as?
Easy….. Liono from The Thundercats!
